The telephone area code 304 is one of the most recognizable area codes in the United States, especially for residents of West Virginia. More than just a series of numbers, it represents a long history of communication, regional identity, and technological growth across the state.
Whether you have received a call from a 304 number, are moving to West Virginia, or simply want to understand where this area code is located, this guide covers everything you need to know about telephone area code 304.
What Is the Telephone Area Code 304?
The area code 304 serves the entire state of West Virginia. It was one of the original area codes established by the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) in 1947.
Unlike many states that are divided into multiple geographic area codes, West Virginia has operated under a single area code for decades because of its relatively small population.
Today, 304 remains one of the most recognized telephone prefixes in the region and continues to be widely used for both landlines and mobile phone numbers.
Where Is Area Code 304 Located
The telephone area code 304 covers all counties and communities throughout West Virginia.
Some of the major cities and towns served by area code 304 include
- Charleston
- Huntington
- Morgantown
- Parkersburg
- Wheeling
- Martinsburg
- Beckley
- Fairmont
Because the area code serves the entire state, people from both rural mountain communities and larger urban centers share the same regional identifiers.
The History of Area Code 304
When the North American Numbering Plan was introduced in 1947, area code 304 was assigned to West Virginia exclusively.
At that time, telephone infrastructure was rapidly expanding across the United States. States with smaller populations often received a single area code, whereas larger states required multiple codes from the beginning.
For decades, 304 remained unchanged. This made it one of the longest-serving original area codes in the country at the time.
As mobile phones, Internet-connected devices, business lines, and digital communication services have increased, the demand for new phone numbers has also grown. This eventually led to the introduction of an additional area code for the state.
The Introduction of Area Code 681
To prevent the exhaustion of available phone numbers, area code 681 was introduced as an overlay in West Virginia.
An overlay means:
- The existing 304 phone numbers remained unchanged.
- New numbers could be assigned as either 304 or 681.
- Ten-digit dialing has become mandatory.
Today, both area codes serve the same geographic region in West Virginia.
Why is an Overlay Required?
Several factors have increased the demand for telephone numbers.
- Growth in mobile phone ownership
- Business communication systems
- Internet and VoIP services
- Smart devices requiring dedicated numbers
- Expansion of telecommunications infrastructure
The overlay allowed regulators and service providers to continue issuing new phone numbers without forcing residents to change their existing numbers.
Is Area Code 304 Still Active?
Yes. The telephone area code 304 remains fully active and continues to be assigned to new customers when available.
Many residents and businesses prefer 304 numbers because of their long-standing connection with West Virginia. In fact, the area code has become a part of the state’s identity and culture.
You will often see 304 used in:
- Local business branding
- Community organizations
- Sports merchandise
- Social media usernames
- Regional marketing campaigns
For many West Virginians, “304” symbolizes home and local pride.
How to Identify a 304 Phone Number
A standard 304 phone number follows this format:
(304) XXX-XXXX
For example:
-
(304) 555-1234
Because of the overlay with 681, residents must dial the area code even when making local calls within the same region.
Ten-Digit Dialing Example
Instead of dialing:
555-1234
You must dial:
304-555-1234
or
681-555-1234
depending on the number of calls.
Common Reasons You May Receive a Call from Area Code 304
If you see a 304 number on your caller ID, it could be from one of these scammers:
- A resident of West Virginia
- A local business
- A government agency
- A healthcare provider
- A school or university
- A customer service department
